On a more topical note... the government hates competition, so it sets up monopolies. It establishes monopolies to steal (e.g. the Federal Reserve), monopolies to commit fraud (e.g. government debt and Social Security's giant ponzi schemes that dwarf Madoff's), and monopolies to commit other crimes that if the average American did they would be thrown in jail.
